Urban and Maritime Transport 2022

The objective of this work is to explore the spatial distribution of the mobility opportunities linked to the population's access to the public transport system and its disadvantages and limitations in relation to socio-economic variables of the districts and the estimated needs of local public transport in the third most densley populated urban area of Colombia, the metropolitan area of Santiago de Cali. The analysis uses and correlates two spatialised indexes: the social transport index and the provision of public transport index, both in absolute and relative terms.

Statistical analysis and spatial analysis of the distribution in terms of standard deviation were executed. Both indexes were contrasted in absolute and relative terms and studied spatially in a mapping that showed the imbalance between supply and need in every area. Finally, Pearson and Spearman coefficients were calculated along with significance levels to validate the results, which revealed that the distribution of the indexes, the transport absolute social needs and the related provision of public transport present a normal distribution, unlike the other two indicators. In terms of maps of standard deviation, the below the mean distribution of the values has been shown to be the majority in the case of the relative index of provision of public transport in the periphery of the study area. On the other hand, the spatial distribution of the absolute and relative index to the social needs of transportation in the central areas are below or at the average of the study area.

It can be concluded that the public access opportunities to the transport system are relatively less concentrated in disadvantaged districts with low socio-economic levels.

A statistical analysis and a spatial analysis of the distribution in terms of standard deviation were performed. Both indexes were contrasted in absolute and relative terms, and studied spatially in a cartography that showed the balance between supply and need in every area. Finally, Pearson and Spearman coefficients were calculated along with significance levels to validate the results, that revealed that the distribution of the indexes, the absolute social transport needs and the related provision of public transport present a normal distribution unlike the other two indicators. Referring to the standard deviation maps, the distribution of the values below the mean has proven to be the majority in the case of the provision relative index of public transport in the periphery of the study area. On the other hand, the spatial distribution of the absolute and relative index relative to the social needs of transportation in the central areas are below or at the average of the study area.

It can be concluded that the public access opportunities to the transport system are relatively less concentrated in disadvantaged districts with low socio-economic levels.
