Cycling as a mode of urban transport is becoming increasingly important to achieve sustainable development. The study of route characteristics that influence the decision to cycle is common. However, the use of configurational variables is not, despite their usefulness. This paper explores a more integrated methodological approach considering both classical cycling route variables and variables supported by urban form. For this purpose (i) a questionnaire was conducted; (ii) routes were mapped according to users' preferences; (iii) the association between frequent cycling and route variables was studied. The case study focuses on the university community of an intermediate Spanish city. The results showed the relevance of configurational variables for estimating cycling probabilities, even ahead of more common ones. In addition, urban planning policies to promote this mode of transport were discussed.
